The Full Story
I started out as the guy no one sees — dispatch, parts, attic runs, crawl spaces. I listened to homeowners on the phone, heard the frustration, and watched how jobs were handed out: whoever could sell the most, not necessarily whoever did the best work.
Eventually I became lead technician at one of the largest A/C companies in Las Vegas. On paper, I was winning — high close rate, busy schedule, "top producer."
But here's what I kept seeing behind the scenes:
- systems replaced that could have been repaired,
- guesses instead of diagnostics,
- techs rewarded more for what they sold than for fixing the actual problem.
"Why didn't anyone else do what you just did?"
— That's when I realized the problem wasn't the equipment. It was the way the game was set up.
